LEARN TO DJ FROM THE GROUND UP

The Mix Nights course combines hands-on technical DJ teaching and mentoring.

Teaching on our beginner course focuses primarily on beat-matching. You will work on developing your listening skills, understanding the equipment and learn how to put a mix together. At the end of the course, you’ll have the chance to put your new skills into practice at a public showcase event at a local venue, where each course graduate plays a 30-minute set.

Classes are designed for absolute beginners, as well as those who have some basic skills but need support with confidence building. The course runs in four cities in England – Bristol, Birmingham Nottingham and London. We will also be offering an Intermediate Mix Nights course in Bristol this Summer. Course details

• 8 x 2-hour teaching sessions over 8 weeks
• Teaching takes place primarily on CDJs (using digital music)
• Courses finish with each participant playing a set in public
• We welcome all genres and all ages 18+
• Free places and payment plans available
• There is a very high demand to take part in Mix Nights, so course intake is done by application rather than straight bookings. We try to ensure a diverse yet complimentary group is chosen that will gel together.

Building visibility and community for women and non-binary DJs

Mix Nights Online is held monthly via Zoom as part of Saffron Members club. A different guest leads each session, sharing practical and personal insights into their approach to DJing. Past guests include Peach, Lady Shaka, Kampire, Martha, Tailor Jae, Anna Morgan and Sherelle.

Mix Nights also has a residency on Noods Radio. The slot is offered out to a different Mix Nights course graduate each month, giving them an opportunity to further showcase their DJ, curation and hosting skills. Past shows are archived on our Mixcloud page.

Mix Nights was created in Bristol in 2016,  off the back of an idea by Shanti Celeste and Saffron’s founder, Laura.

The unique course syllabus was developed by DJs Em Williams, Danielle and Daisy Moon, with Jenny Wade and Lizzy Ellis working behind the scenes as project managers. Mix Nights in London is now run by early Bristol course graduate Glade Marie – which is a beautiful full-circle moment – and taught by J Oh Zee and Oh My Dais. The Nottingham course is taught by Outsider and Princess Trium, with Romo Weeks and Mini heading up our Birmingham offering.

Course graduates go on to play on lineups and radios stations around the world

We love to see Mix Nights graduates go on to thrive, gracing lineups like Love Saves The Day, Glastonbury and Lovebox. Many are now regulars and residents on stations like Rinse FM, Foundation, FM, BBC Radio 1Xtra, 1020, Noods, Worldwide FM and more. New DJ collectives and nights have also sprung up as a result of people who’ve taken the course, such as Booty Bass, Boys Club, ITT and Shellingz.
